/ OVERVIEW

At ASVOFF, we are dedicated to celebrating the intersection of fashion and film as a powerful medium for artistic expression and cultural dialogue. Founded by visionary Diane Pernet, the festival showcases the creativity and innovation of filmmakers, designers, and artists from around the world. Our mission is to provide a platform for interdisciplinary collabotation: to bring together filmmakers, designers, and other creative professionals, from emerging talents to seasoned veterans, to promote cultural exchange, foster artistic experiementation, and highlight the diverse perscpectives that reflect the rich tapestry of global fashion and film cultures.

Equally, ASVOFF aims to inspire and educate audiences about fashion and film, encouraging them to see the world through new, shaded perspectives. ASVOFF achieves this not only through a carefully curated selection of films, but also via the various panel discussions hosted by industry experts, which offer a uniquely intimate and fertile environment for topics most relevant to the fashion and film industries to circulate. More than a film festival,  ASVOFF has become a space and moment during the year for the cinematic vanguard to address the most critical issues of our time through themed competitions.

ASVOFF fosters an environment of creativity, inclusivity, and forward-thinking, where diverse voices can shine and where the avant-garde is embraced. Pernet is committed to scouting talents whose vision of fashion and creativity not only resonates with the contemporary industry but also challenges it. The festival provides global visibility for both new and established talent, offering sponsors the opportunity to connect with a highly engaged, international audience of fashion, film, and cultural influencers. We are committed to elevating the voices that shape the future of fashion and film, and invites its sponsors to be a part of this cultural movement — one that celebrates both artistry and innovation while influencing the future of creative storytelling in fashion.

/ THE FORCE BEHIND THE FESTIVAL

Diane Pernet is one of the most recognisable yet enigmatic faces in fashion. A true icon of the industry, Diane is famous for her inimitable personal style and trailblazing initiatives that consistently champion the avant-garde. Her career is considered prolific in her dedication to uplifting creativity across fashion, film, as well as discovering some of the most note-worthy talent shaping the globe.

Before cementing her reputation as a digital media maverick in Paris, where she helped pioneer the fashion blogging medium through her platform A Shaded View on Fashion—while writing for the early digital editions of Elle and Vogue—Diane spent her formative years in New York designing an eponymous womenswear brand. As an offspring to her 2006 film festival, You Wear It Well, Diane founded the world's first international fashion film festival ASVOFF in 2008, which has over the years helped to develop ‘fashion film’ as the popular genre it is today.

ASVOFF’s mission is to bridge the worlds of fashion and cinema, worlds which Pernet believes are deeply connected through their powers of storytelling. ASVOFF provides a dynamic platform for innovative filmmakers, designers, and artists to present their work in a way that challenges the conventional boundaries of both indusries.

Pernet hosts ASVOFF annually in Paris, then takes it on the road to screen at prestigious international institutions and events like the Guggenheim, the Barbican, Art Basel Miami and the Cannes Film Festival. Genre-bending and groundbreaking, ASVOFF has inspired audiences far and wide with its programme featuring a diverse spectrum of figures from fashion and cinema, spanning Academy Award-nominated directors and luxury’s largest megabrands, to indie filmmakers and designers on the cutting edge of the creative industries.

Diane has garnered many honours throughout her career including having been featured on stage at a seminal fashion exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, inducted as a member of the BoF 500 by The Business of Fashion, and captured on film through cameo appearances in Robert Altman’s ‘Prêt-à-Porter’, Roman Polanski’s ‘The Ninth Gate’, ‘Emily in Pairs’, ‘Zoolander 2’ and more.

/ THE JURY

Willy Chavarria, originally from California, began his creative journey with a focus on commercial art, studying graphic design at the Academy of the Arts. However, he ultimately found his passion in the world of fashion, where he decided to channel his talents to enhance human dignity. His mission is to uplift the underrepresented through the transformative power of art and design.

The Willy Chavarria collections embody a sensitive and cinematic approach, seamlessly blending the emotional depth of art with contemporary political themes, telling a compelling story of the human spirit. Willy strives to be a voice for the voiceless, often collaborating with organizations to advocate for social justice. His inspiration is drawn from biographical elements, including nods to his Mexican- American heritage, the beauty found in the streets, and the surrounding culture.

The brand gained recognition through provocative and thought-provoking runway presentations, catching the attention of world-renowned stores such as Barneys, Dover Street Market, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Brown’s. Moreover, starting from spring 2024, the brand plans to expand its presence globally through additional stockists.

Willy's accolades include being a finalist for the International Woolmark Prize in 2018, one of the ten winners of the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund in 2021, and a recipient of a small business grant from IMG and the state of New York in 2022. In September 2022, he was honored with the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award in Fashion Design. Most recently, in 2023, Willy was celebrated as the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year.
